وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
And fruits and Abba
Fakihah includes every type of fruit. Ibn Abbas said, “Al-Fakihah is everything that is eaten ripe. And fruits are a delight to eat. Not only is it nutritious but is sweet and delicious.
ABB: is what the earth grows that is eaten by grazing animals and not people.” In one narration reported from him (Ibn Abbas) he said, “It is the grass for the livestock animals
So it is as if Allah is saying, ‘Your food some of it is for you and some of it is for your animals’. Allah began my mentioning that which is essential for us (staples) and now ends by mentions foods that are not necessarily essential.
An interesting point about this word ABB.
Abu Bakr was once asked about the meaning of the word “ABB” in the words of Allah, the Most High: “And fruits and ABB ” [ABASA:31] Abu Bakr replied, “Which sky would give me shade, and which land would carry me if I say about the Book of Allah something I do not know.” ”As for Faakihah, I know its meaning but as with ABB, Allah knows best”. [Sunan, al Darimi, vol 1 p 54/ Tafsir Ibn Katheer, vol 4 p 232]
[We can say that perhaps he didn’t know what was ABB because it could have been a word that was of a different dialect to his own OR perhaps he did know what ABB is in general (fodder/animal food) but did not know the specific food being referred to in the word ABB (as ABB is a general word).
