78:17 Verily the Day of FASL is a fixed time

إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا

Verily, the Day of FASL is a fixed time

Here begins the next theme of this Surah.

Allah is denying the rejection of the rejectors and saying that INDEED/VERILY the day of Judgement is an appointed time.

FASL is to take two things and separate them so much that they are clearly apart from one another YOUM AL FASL The Day of clear separation. The day of Judgement has many names e.g YOUM AT Taghabun, YOUM UD Deen etc. What is the significance of mentioning YOUM UL FASL here?

There are 2 reasons: 1) To separate between the true claim from the false claim. Meaning this is the Day when the truth will be separated from falsehood. 2) It is a separation of people. The believers will be separate from the disbelievers etc.

The word كَانَ KANA is used here. Meaning that it WAS appointed. Meaning that this appointment with Allah was something that was determined a long time ago. This is what the word كَانَ signifies. Another significance of كَانَ is that it ensures that the day of separation was appointed and it WILL happen. The disbelievers would say ‘When is this Day going to come? They thought it would never come. They thought that if it were to come then it would have come by now. But Allah is saying here that it has already been appointed and it will come. Thus assuring the disbelievers that it is bound to occur, even tho it hasn’t happened yet.

Their denial of the day of Judgment is not going to make Allah hasten it for them. Why should Allah hasten the Day for them? Why should Allah listen to them? Listening to them or responding to them by hastening the Day is a form of weakness. Whereas Allah is not weak but is All Powerful. The disbelievers would always ask the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم such questions like, Why don’t you show us this sign or that sign etc. Or why doesn’t this happen or that. Then if Allah keeps responding to their claims it will be a sign of weakness. And in reality they are not asking to know the truth, they are just mocking. So there is no point in giving them any more proofs because everything is already clear.
